Can Vegans Eat Cream Cheese? Best Veg Alternatives

vegan cream cheese

This article looks into one of the most frequently asked questions regarding foods that are vegan friendly: Can vegans eat cream cheese?

Similar to most cheese varieties, cream cheese is made by culturing animal milk over a period of time to separate the whey and curd. They whey is drained off leaving the curd behind. Depending on the cheese, the curd is mixed with additional flavoring ingredients and aged to make the final product. Since cream cheese is made from animal milk, it is not a vegan friendly product. Therefore, those following a vegan diet cannot eat cream cheese.

While vegans abstain from eating all animal products, vegetarians only abstain from eating the meat or flesh of animals. Most vegetarians will continue to eat dairy products (including milk and cheese). Therefore, cream cheese would be considered vegetarian friendly.

With that being said, there are a plethora of vegan cream cheese options on the market these days and many easy to make vegan cream cheese recipes available. The following sections include the best vegan cream cheese alternatives and easy to make vegan cream cheese recipes.
