Pieology Pizzeria is an American fast casual pizza chain with more than 140 locations in the United States, half of those being in California according to WikipediaSimilar to their competitors (Blaze Pizza and MOD Pizza), Pieology offers individual, artisan style pizzas, which are baked in a high-temperature open-flame oven. Customers begin by choosing which of the ingredients they’d like on their pizza. As customers work their way down the service line, staff assemble a pizza based on customer instructions. In this article we breakdown all of Pieology’s vegan options in 2022.

All of the ingredients listed in this article were verified to be vegan with Piology’s nutrition guide

Chef Inspired Pizzas

Unfortunately, none of the chef inspired pizzas at Pieology are vegan friendly. Two of the pizzas are vegetarian (Zesty Artichoke and Margherita Da Vinci), but multiple substitutions need to be made to make these vegan-friendly. Your best bet is to go with a create-your-own pizza and salad option. A full list of the vegan-friendly ingredients are in the following sections.

Crust

There are five crust options at Pieology, but only the Gluten Free Crust is vegan. Unfortunately, their Artisan Thin Crust (Whey), Artisan Wheat Crust (Honey), Cauliflower Crust (Cheese and Egg), and PieRise Crust (Whey) are not vegan-friendly.

Sauce

Pieology has both “Crust Oils” and traditional sauces. All the crust oil options (Garlic Herb Butter, Liquid Butter Alternative, and Olive Oil) are vegan. Even though the first two have crust oils have “butter” in the name, they are both soybean-oil based.

Of the traditional sauce options, their BBQ Sauce, Fiery Buffalo Sauce, and House Red Sauce are vegan. Both the 3-Cheese Alfredo and Pesto contain cheese and milk-based ingredients.

Plant Proteins & Cheese

While Pieology doesn’t have great vegan crust options, they make up for it in the plant based proteins. They have THREE vegan-friendly plant proteins which come in “Beef Meatballs”, “Diced Chicken”, and “Spicy Italian Sausage Rounds” varieties.

In addition to their plant proteins, Pieology also has Daiya dairy-free (vegan) Mozzarella.

Toppings

There is a multitude of vegan toppings to load up on your pizza at Pieology. These toppings include:

  • Artichokes
  • Banana Peppers
  • Basil
  • Black Olives
  • Cilantro
  • Garlic
  • Grape Tomatoes
  • Green Peppers
  • Jalapenos
  • Kalamata Olives
  • Marinated Artichokes
  • Mushrooms
  • Pineapple
  • Red Onions
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Roasted Red Peppers
  • Spinach

After Bake Options

Pieology has multiple “After Bake” options to top off your pizza after baking. All but two of them (Pesto and Ranch) are vegan-friendly. These after bake options are Basil, BBQ, Black Pepper, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fiery Buffalo, and House Red Sauce.

Salads

In addition to their pizzas, Pieology also has some salads to choose from. They have multiple salad options, but the best bet for a vegan salad is to create-your-own. However, none of their salad dressings are vegan-friendly so you have to get creative with your dressing. The full create-your-own salad options are as follows:

Greens

  • Spinach
  • Spring Mix
  • Romaine Hearts

Cheese

  • Daiya Mozzerella

Protein

  • Plant Protein – “Beef Meatballs”
  • Plant Protein – “Diced Chicken”
  • Plant Protein – “Spicy Italian Sausage Rounds”
Toppings – Same as those listed above.

Dressings – None of Pieology’s salad dressings are vegan, but you could use olive oil or one of the pizza sauces as a dressing.

Skip the Sides & Sweets

Unfortunately, none of Pieology’s sides or sweets are vegan-friendly so make sure to fill up on their pizza or salads.

Drinks

Wash your pizza or salad down with a refreshing drink! Pieology has a variety of sodas (Coke Products), lemonades, and teas. All of them appear to be vegan-friendly!

Summary

Pieology is an interesting restaurant for vegan options. On one hand they have a great selection of plant-based proteins and Daiya cheese, but on the other hand they only have one vegan crust (Gluten Free) and no vegan salad dressings. If you are fine with gluten-free crusts, then Pieology could be a great place for you!
